“I find it hard to hold back tears when I tell my story.”
My name is Jayne Pritchard, I’m a long-time local resident. I am also an anchor at CTV News here in Barrie where I’ve had the opportunity to report on the exceptional care provided at Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) for many years. And, probably like most of you, I’ve also experienced care at RVH first-hand.
Almost four years ago I was diagnosed with breast cancer. To say it was a frightening time for me is an understatement. It was comforting to find that I had a team of experts to provide me with very skilled and compassionate care at RVH’s Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre.
I find it hard to hold back tears when I tell my story. Although I’m grateful and honoured to be here today to share my story with you, it’s also a difficult story for me to tell. I’m sure if you or a loved one have ever experienced cancer, you know exactly how I feel.
When you think of the moments that matter in your life, what pops into your mind? I’ve experienced many pivotal moments in my life. Starting my career at what’s now CTV Barrie in 1982, the birth of my son at the old RVH Ross Street site and most recently the thrill of becoming a grandmother. Receiving a cancer diagnosis was an incredibly life-impacting moment too – sadly, not as joyous as those others.
But through all the ups and downs of my treatments and surgeries there were two constants: the support of my loved ones and my community, and the excellent care I received every time I stepped through the doors of the cancer centre at RVH.
My surgeon Dr. Renee Hanrahan, who is the Surgical Oncology Lead at RVH, is an incredible person and physician! She was supportive, kind, and an expert in her field. I knew I was in good hands from the moment we met. We are fortunate to have specialists like Dr. Hanrahan close to home, here in Simcoe Muskoka.
My body went through a lot as I had seven surgeries in total. During all of this, I worried about all the unknowns, but I never once felt anxious about going to the health centre, because I knew I would be receiving the absolute best care. The doctors, nurses, care teams, and the volunteers always made me feel safe and cared for. Looking back, I can say that RVH has definitely been there for me and my family in the moments that matter.
Thank you for supporting exceptional healthcare close to home.
