New Mom and grateful patient Sherri shares how community support is necessary in ensuring exceptional care is available in the moments that matter most.

When I first walked through the doors of RVH, I had no idea what was about to happen. I’d woken up in the night with pains I was concerned about and I just wanted to get checked out as a precaution. I thought they’d examine me, tell me everything was fine, and then send me home. I was only 29 weeks pregnant, after all.

I certainly didn’t expect to give birth four hours later.  

I was frightened and confused – it wasn’t supposed to happen this way. But I remember thinking one thing; even through all the panic and fear, I knew I was in the best hands possible at RVH.   

And I was right. My care team knew exactly what they were doing, and helped me safely give birth to my tiny baby girl, Harlow. She was only two pounds, seven ounces.  

The average stay in the NICU is seven and a half days, but many babies stay much, much longer. Harlow was in the NICU for 50 days – that’s a long time to spend in the hospital as a new family!  

As a parent with a premature infant or ill child, you go through a rollercoaster of intense, emotional moments. And from the moment Harlow was born, to seeing her in an incubator in the NICU, to the first time I got to hold her or bathe her for the first time … it was a lot to take in.

Giving birth during a pandemic was hardly ideal. But during my stay with Harlow, I was so impressed by the RVH team, for their dedication to keeping all of us safe.   

Given we were unable to have our family by our side during those early frightening days, we were also so grateful the RVH team stepped in to fill that gap with so much compassion and understanding that we never felt alone.  

They were so gentle, honest and open with us. And that made all the difference. The support and kindness we received is one of the things that kept me going, even on the darkest of days.   

Harlow is now seven months old and is a healthy, happy and energetic little girl.  She’s proof that your kindness and compassion can truly impact the lives of RVH’s tiniest patients and their families.
